Tangerine-basil ice pops will make you happy

Over the past few years, gourmet versions of Mexican paletas — i.e., ice pops — have been delighting the sweaty set in other Southern towns such as Nashville and Raleigh, North Carolina.

The tangerine-basil pop was great — the flavor really captured the sweet, refreshing mintiness of basil and not too much of its licorice character. I liked the final bites, which had a few chopped basil leaves in them.

From AIG To "King Of Pops"

The first thing you notice about Steven Carse is that he's a pretty chilled-out guy. That may have come in handy at his last job, as an analyst for insurance giant AIG, but it's a literal necessity in his new role as the King Of Pops. When the 26-year-old Atlanta resident lost his job with the company that was "too big to fail," he put all his energy into a venture that's the antithesis of everything AIG's known for these days. No boss, no spreadsheets, no talk of derivatives. Carse and his brother bought a rolling cart and decided to sell handmade, gourmet popsicles at a busy corner in Atlanta. Only fresh ingredients from local farmers' markets go into Carse's creations. You won't find his flavors in your grocer's freezer–combinations like chocolate sea-salt, pineapple-habenero, and one of Carse's favorites, grapefruit-mint.

Hail to the King

Carse's popsicles – which are all vegan – have almost the same taste (but better quality) of a smoothie. If you're looking for a dessert-type pop that's more filling, you can find those on the menu as well. Add to the fact that they're made with fresh fruits – he buys organic and local fruit when possible – and you have an independent upstart with a sustainable mind-set. Summer on the streets of Atlanta just got more delicious.
